1. Measure the item
Side to side, at the widest point.
Floor to the highest point.
Front to back, at the deepest point.
2. Measure the way out and the way in
Add every opening the item passes through, in order. Measure doorways with the door fully open, from the door face to the opposite frame.
Planning allowance: of clearance on each measurement, for hands, padding, and wrapping.
How to measure furniture and doorways
- Item: measure width, height, and depth at the widest points, including arms, cushions, and handles.
- Doorways: open the door fully and measure from the face of the open door to the opposite frame, then measure the height.
- Hallways and stairs: measure the narrowest point, including handrails. Note any turns or landings.
- Elevators: measure the door opening and the inside width, depth, and height.
The checker tests every opening you add, in order, with a planning allowance for hands and padding. A pass at the first door does not hide a problem at the second. Turns in stairways and hallways always go to our crew for review, because whether a piece can be tilted around a corner depends on details a tape measure cannot capture.
The three results mean: Appears to fit (every opening passed with room to spare), More measurements needed (something is missing), and Crew review recommended (a tight fit, a turn, a failed opening, or a fragile or heavy item).
Furniture fit questions
How do I know if my couch will fit through the door?
Measure the couch width, height, and depth, then measure the doorway width with the door fully open and the doorway height. If the two smallest sides of the couch are smaller than the door opening, minus some room for hands and padding, it should fit. Enter the numbers above to check every door on the route.
How do you measure a doorway for furniture?
Open the door fully and measure from the face of the open door to the opposite door frame for the width, then measure the height from the floor to the top of the frame.
What if my furniture will not fit through the door?
Removing the door from its hinges, taking off legs or feet, or carrying the piece at an angle can help. Mark the item for crew review and our team will plan it.
Can movers get furniture up stairs with a turn?
Often, but it depends on the ceiling height, the landing size, and how the piece can be tilted. Stairs with a turn or landing always go to crew review in this checker.
Is the furniture fit checker a guarantee?
No. It is a planning aid based on your measurements. Our crew reviews close fits, turns, and heavy or fragile pieces before moving day.
