Moving checklist questions
When should I start planning a move?
Start about 8 weeks before moving day. That gives you time to compare movers, declutter, and order supplies before you start packing about 4 weeks out.
How far in advance should I book movers?
For local moves, 1 to 2 weeks of notice is usually enough, though month-end dates fill up fast. For long-distance moves, we recommend booking 3 to 4 weeks ahead.
What should I pack first when moving?
Pack the rooms and items you use least first: guest rooms, books, seasonal decor, and off-season clothes. Save daily essentials for last.
When should I change my address with USPS?
Our checklist puts it at the 4-week mark. You choose the date forwarding begins, so filing early is fine; aim for at least two weeks before you move. See the change of address checklist.
What goes in a moving day essentials box?
Toiletries, phone chargers, medications, important documents, and anything you need for the first night. Keep it with you instead of on the truck.
